“… We have made a vaccine against toxoplasmosis using only CD8 epitopes. This vaccine stimulates cellular immune responses to kill Toxoplasma parasites where they hide inside different tissue cells of the host. We have also learned how to make the SAPN more immunogenic by adding small protein sequences within each strand or by adding a couple of modified strands per nanoparticle.”
“We incorporated our concept into the Toxoplasma SAPN work, where it demonstrated robust protection after vaccination,” comments McLeod. “This is amenable to adding immunogens to stimulate other parts of the human immune system that are critical for protection. We are hopeful this unique immunosense approach will reach the clinic before long to protect against these devastating diseases caused by Toxoplasma,” says McLeod.
